The YouTube-TikTok War of 2020
Date Filed MAY 2020Winner YouTube IndiaLoser TikTok
VERDICT: YOUTUBE WINS
◆ WHAT HAPPENED

In May 2020, CarryMinati posted 'YouTube vs TikTok: The End' targeting TikTok creator Amir Siddiqui. The video became the most-liked non-music video in Indian YouTube history — 75 million views in 6 days — before YouTube removed it citing cyberbullying violations.

The deletion detonated. #BanTikTok trended nationally. Creators united across platforms. The incident poisoned public sentiment against TikTok at exactly the wrong moment politically.

◆ WHO WON

YouTubers, decisively. CarryMinati's subscriber count jumped from 18M to 27M overnight. Two months post-video, the Indian government banned TikTok along with 58 Chinese apps citing national security — but with the cultural groundwork already laid.

TikTok lost 200 million Indian users permanently. CarryMinati became India's most-subscribed individual creator.
